The eyes are as UG had posted in one of her earlier posts, taken from the traditional Kalighat pots, and makes him a very imporatnt influence to the bengali mind.
Btw, Ug, did i ever tell you, how i always used to think he was woman?

like medusa said, artists in bengal and most parts of india painted the eye in that way in the 18th and 19th century.

I looked for Kalighat pots on the net didn't find anything relevent.
What are Kalighat pots used for?

P.S. Watched 'Passage To India' today. I'm sure i saw some Tamarind fruit hanging from a tree in that movie.
Could I be correct?

yes it could have been a tamarind tree...quite a comon sight in India...its kinda funny that u find it incomprehensible that a tamarind fruit can actually hang from the tree, but coming from a temperate region i m sure it must make an exotic sight.
